Cause & Effect for 1st and 2nd Graders

Do your students understand Cause and Effect? They might not know it by those words, but they certainly understand that if you drop a glass cup, it will break.

Do you use centers in your room? Or have an adult or helper in your room? This set of Cause & Effect cards would work great in centers or with a helper.

It's made in black and white, so you can print it on color paper and save on your color ink.

You can get your own copy here.

But if you prefer to use colored ink, you can grab this set instead.

Ready for a Good Book During That First Week?

One of the first books I would read to my students on the first day of school was Amelia Bedelia. Oh how I loved that crazy lady.

She helped us see that we all don't understand directions or common phrases. The students were great at predicting the outcome once they saw how she mixed things up. They loved telling me what she SHOULD have done instead. This shows them just how smart they are.

So, if you're looking for a great book to read on those first few days of school, try Amelia Bedelia. Then continue to read the other books by Peggy Parish about Amelia Bedelia. You won't be disappointed.

Scrambled Sentences Encourage Your Students to get Excited About Learning!

One of the activities that my students almost beg to do when our work is done is my scrambled sentences. They come in most seasons or holidays right now. They come in a colored set and a black and white set so you can print them on colored paper instead.

Click this picture.

This is the Summer set in color,
(with an older cover version shown here).

These pictures show students working on the March set.

Below you see the finished sentence. Once they finish it, they read it back to each other, another student, or an adult. Next they mix it all up for the next group to work on. These two students will move to another area to work on a different mixed up sentence.

If you'd like to see them in my store, just click on the cover pictures above and it will take you right to that section in my store.

If you'd like to be one of the first to see my new products, Click HERE to follow me. I will be giving 50% off my new products for the first 24 hours. So it pays to follow me!

Summer Travels to Mackinac Island

I love summer. I think most of us do. I love my job of teaching these little minds, but those summer months certainly help to refresh our souls don't they?

My daughter and her family live in Houston, TX and just arrived here in Michigan for about a month. I love having them here. It's a perk for them too because Texas is having high temps of over 100 degrees. . . and here in Michigan it's been in the high 70's to 80's. A lot more comfortable for them to be outside in this weather.

We took a vacation to Mackinac Island last week. My grandchildren have never been and I'm excited to show them some of the history or our state.

Have you ever been to Mackinac Island? Or Mackinaw City? Or driven over the Mackinac Bridge? It's 5 miles long! My dad remembers crossing the water on ferries before the bridge was built in 1957.

Did you know there is a different spelling for the island and the town? Here's why. . .

BRITISH INFLUENCE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

The British took control of Fort Michilimackinac in 1761 and 20 years later moved the fort over the ice from the mainland to its current location on Mackinac Island. Over time, Michilimackinac got shortened to Mackinac. The island since has been known as Mackinac Island and the fort as Fort Mackinac.

However, when present-day Mackinaw City was founded in the 1850s, the British changed the spelling of the city to reflect the way the name is pronounced, with a “w” sound at the end.

This trip was dampened a bit by the fires in Canada. On most days we could only see parts of the Mackinaw Bridge. But on the day we went to Mackinac Island, it was a perfectly clear day.

It's hard to believe. . . but the bridge is truly in the background.

These kiddos were all so brave and rode the zip line at Mystery Spot in
St. Ignace. It sure looked like fun!

We explored animal skins, skulls, and stuffed animals at

This was one of our cabins at Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping.

It was a great place for our family to stay. We were right on Lake Huron and could see the bridge and Mackinac Island (on a clear day!)

What are you doing for fun this summer? Any plans to travel? I'd love to hear about them. Share with me in your comments.

Students Easily Handle a Little Responsibility with Lunch Count Signs!

Would you like a way to make your morning routine go smoother?

Would you like to teach your students to become more independent? More responsible?

I have just what you need!

These Lunch Count signs will do all those things for you and also keep your life more organized too.

Each set comes with 18 different choices to use in your classroom. But if you don't see something you need, leave me a message with the wording that you need along with your email address and I'll create it for you and even sell it to you at 50% off.

Each morning all names are posted under the word ABSENT

Students move their name to the correct word that shows what they are eating for lunch. Any names that are left in the ABSENT column, you know are either absent or the child forgot to do their job.

You can have a helper move those names back to the ABSENT column at the end of the day.

Avoid Summer Slide With These Reading Calendars

There is still time to grab these Summer Calendars. You can send them home with your students on that last day of school.

Tell them to do as many of these reading things in any order so that they keep reading "SOMETHING" during the summer.

You can inform the next year's teacher about these so that when students turn them in when school starts back up, you can give them a reward for all the reading they did during the summer.

Click the picture above to go to my store to find these calendars.

They come in English and Spanish.

Are You Ready For More Problem Solving Ideas?

I want to share a few more products that are great for Problem Solving for your class.

Click the picture above to go to this product in my store.

Many teachers have had success with these worksheets as they don't take too much time, but they allow the student to think and work through the problem. There is another sheet that can be printed on the back that gives the students a place to draw a picture to help them solve the problem. There is also space where they can write an explanation of how they solved it. I hope you try it and see if you too like this.

Click this picture above to go to this product in my store.

I made these task cards after watching my students struggle with the NWEA test. They didn't have enough exposure to questions like these in their daily workbooks. The charts were so unfamiliar to them. You can do these on the document camera as a problem of the day to help them learn how to answer these when they see them on a future test.

Click the picture above to go to my store to see this product.
I always thought skip counting was fun. Once I saw the pattern, I had a lot of success with them. BUT. . . not everyone thinks they are so fun. And that might be because they don't know how to find that pattern. Use these on a document camera or independently in your class. I believe you will see good success with these.

So now that you've had a chance to see more great ideas for Problem Solving, please remember to go vote to see who wins next. Just click the picture below to find out more information.

And if you want to enter to win $100.00 a TPT gift card click HERE.
